There are some cheering points for Universities in India in the Graduate Employability Rankings. On Graduate Employment Rate parameter, IIT Madras breaks into top ten global universities. IIT Madras scores 96.6/100 for Graduate Employment Rate, making it India’s highest-scoring university for this indicator, and the fourth-highest scoring university in the world for this metric.

On Alumni Outcomes metric University of Delhi features in the Top 20 Universities list. University of Delhi scores 98.6/100 for Alumni Outcomes, and ranks 13th globally for this indicator.

The top 20 is comprised of institutions from the United States (8), the United Kingdom and China (three each), Australia (2), France (1), Canada (1), Switzerland (1) and Hong Kong (1).

Ben Sowter, Head of Research at QS, said: “The 2017 instalment of this ranking illustrates that universities with a heavy STEM focus are generally among the most successful in nurturing student employability.”

This cannot simply be attributed to students at these universities being more employable due to taking STEM degrees, as graduate employability rate is only one of the five indicators that contribute to this year’s ranking, and the employability rate is not broken down by subject taken.

Considering the growing developed globally for information about employability, QS for the first time has designed the ranking to help prospective students compare their options internationally. It provides a complement to the overall QS World University Rankings while applicants will get a clearer idea about how institutions perform in parameters related to employability.

QS has been providing expert insight and analysis for the higher education sector since 1990. The full QS Graduate Employability Rankings for 2017 can be viewed here, while the methodology can be found here.

The ranking broad parameters are based on the following parameters: Employer reputation (based on a global survey of graduate employers); Alumni outcomes (mapping of educational paths to leadership lists); Employer partnerships (engagement with industry in research and other areas);  Employer-student connections (opportunities to connect on campus or online); and Graduate employment rates (adjusted to account for national averages).

300 institutions were included in the rankings this year. This ranking differs from QS’s other exercises in offering universities the opportunity to opt-out while it remains in its nascent stages.
