Roorkee: Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering 2017 were successfully completed and the results were declared on 26 March 2017. The data on GATE 2017 results and number of candidates appeared the test reflects some interesting trend. In the GATE 2017 exam only 16% of total candidates appeared the text were declared qualified.
IIT Roorkee was the Organizing Institute for GATE 2017, along with the coordinating institutes, IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Madras. IIT Roorkee, organizing institute for GATE 2017, informed that the total number of candidates registered for the test this year were more than 9.22 lakh while the number of candidates who appeared for the examinations were nearly 7.87 (85%). The number of candidates who finally qualified were nearly 1.29 (including General, OBC, SC/ST/PwD), which represents 16% of the total number of candidates who appeared for the examination.
More interestingly, subject wise analysis of candidates registsred for the test reflects an interesting trend. Out of a total of 23 papers (subjects) in which GATE 2017 were conducted as an online test, Mechanical Engineering (ME) had the highest of registsred candidates with 217,835 applicants. Electronics & Communication Engineering (EC) saw the second highest candidates with 171,160 applicants. Civil Engineering (CE, 147,012 applicants), Electrical Engineering (EE, 135426), Computer Science & Information Technology (CS, 116,754) had a large number of candidates.
Over the last four years, the historical qualified candidates rate/pass percentage remained in the range of 15-17%. As per the Information Brochure of GATE 2017, a total number of 971,831 candidates registered to appear the test, out of them 818,850 candidates appeared the test for GATE 2016. At the end only 135,392 candidates qualified for GATE 2016, which translates to 16.53% of total candidates appeared the test.
The new features in GATE 2017 were addition of a new sectional paper on Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and the conduct of GATE 2017 in six international centres in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Colombo (Sri Lanka), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Dubai (UAE), Kathmandu (Nepal) and Singapore.
Twenty government organizations (PSUs) have signed a memorandum of understanding with GATE 2017 to use the GATE score for their recruitment process.
