New Delhi:  India is one of largest higher education systems in the globe with nearly 34 million students in the higher learning institutes in India. There are 799 universities as on 31 March 2016 in India. Though the academic year 2017-18 is yet to commence, the admission process has already started. Many premier universities including Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Jamia Millia Islamia have already notified the admission procedure for AY 2017-18. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is expected to notify Admission 2017-18 very soon.

Many universities have already released their official advertisements for admission to various programmes spanning from under graduates degree to PhD degree programmes. Students, parents and academicians face tough time for selecting the right university for higher study. There are many agencies or media groups release rankings in India on colleges and universities. The government of India sponsored ranking process, known as National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF), was launched first time in April 2016.  The ranking list for 2017 is going on and is expected to be released in 1st week of April 2017.  Here, SkillOutlook presents the top fifty universities as per NIRF 2016.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, the premier science and research institute, was crowned as the top university in India. The second position was claimed by another science & technology theme based institute, Institute of Chemical Technology ICT, Mumbai. JNU secured the third place and becomes the top ranked university in general stream category. University of Hyderabad stood at the fourth place in NIRF 2016 (university category).

Tezpur University of Assam secured the fifth rank while Delhi University occupied the sixth spot. Banaras Hindu University (BHU) featured at the seventh place in the NIRF 2016 ranking list. Another science stream institute, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram placed at eight spot.

Among private universities, Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani was at the top while the university grabbed ninth spot in the national ranking list. Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was at the tenth position in NIRF 2016.

The next top ranked universities in the ranking band of 11-15 are as followed: Visva Bharati, Kolkata (11), Punjab University, Chandigarh (12), Pondicherry University, Pondicherry (13), Bharathiar University, Coimbatore (14),  Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore (Joint 14) and North Eastern Hill University, Shillong               (15).

Nearly, 3,500 private and public institutions participated in the ‘India Rankings 2016’. The ranking prepared was prepared by National Bureau of Accreditation (NBA) based on five criteria — teaching and learning resources, graduation outcome, perception, outreach and inclusivity and research productivity. The NIRF informed that all institutions were selected based on self-disclosure of information.
