Bangalore: The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bangalore, a Department of Science & Technology –funded research institute, has invited applications for PhD and the integrated MTech-PhD (Tech) programs. The online application has opened from 04 April 2017. The closing date for online application is 24 April 2017.

IIA Bangalore is engaged in research activities focused on astronomy, astrophysics and related areas of physics. PhD programmes are available in the following subjects: Applied Physics/Engg Physics, Applied Mathematics, Astronomy, Electronics, Photonics/Optics,    Physics, Applied Physics, Instrumentation, Photonics/Optics, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics, Electronics & Communication, Instrumentation, and Photonics/Optics/Opto-electronics.

Eligibility Conditions for PhD Programmes: A. Candidate may apply if: (a) he/she qualified for JRF in the NET/CSIR/UGC exam, or, (b) scored 96 percentile or above in the JEST 2017, or, (c) scored 97 percentile or above in GATE.

Candidates applying for the IIA-PhD program based on their GATE / JEST score must have qualified in the PHYSICS paper of GATE / JEST.

NOTE: Percentile = [(T-R)/T]*100, where T = Total number of candidates, and R = All India Rank

B. IMPORTANT: The admission criteria also requires that the candidate to have scored aggregate of 55% marks or above throughout his/her academic career.

C. Candidates who obtained their last degree (qualifying degree) before 2013 are not eligible to apply.

Scholarship & Other Allowances: PhD scholars are eligible to get the stipend of a JRF is Rs. 25,000/- pm, and of a SRF is Rs. 28,000/- pm in addition to an annual book grant and medical facilities.

 PhD Programme is offered in collaboration with Pondicherry Central University, Puducherry.  Integrated MTech – PhD (Tech) programme in Astronomical Instrumentation is offered in collaboration with University of Calcutta, Kolkata. The duration of MTech course work will be of 2 years divided into 4 semesters. After successful completion of the M. Tech course a student can opt for registration for PhD (Tech.) programme, subjected to a selection procedure and minimum cut-off grade.

The Integrated MTech- Ph.D (Tech.) Programme will admit bright, highly motivated students with a three years B.Tech. degree (Post BSc Hons) in Optics and Optoelectronics / Radio Physics and Electronics from CU or B.Tech / BE degree in Electrical/ Instrumentation/ Electronics and Communications /Computer Science and Engineering from an institution recognized by AICTE. A candidate with M.Sc degree in Physics / Electronic Science / Applied Mathematics /Applied Physics from a UGC recognized institution is also eligible to apply.
