New Delhi: Lots of changes are happening in the research degree programmes especially Doctoral degree, or popularly known as PhD. The most significant is the notification of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of MPhil/PhD Degrees) Regulations 2016, which has been notified in July 2016 by the University Grants Commission.  Hence, cracking a PhD seat in any university is becoming a difficult task if one has not done through preparations in qualifying/admission test (if any) and research interview.

More than 27 thousand scholars received PhD degree in 2014-15, as per the UGC Annual Report 2015-16. In India more than one lakh students enroll for PhD programmes in various subjects. As per AISHE 2015-16, 1,26,451 students are enrolled in PhD that is less than 0.4% of the total student enrolment.  Major universities admit PhD students in two sessions (July-August, January-February) in an academic year.   For the current session, July 2017-18, most of the universities have already either closed admission process or are at the end part of the admission process.

Undoubtedly, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi is the most popular destination for PhD programmes in general stream subjects. The entrance test of JNU for PhD programmes is tough due to competition as a large number of students apply for it. PhD programmes offered by Banaras Hindu University are another popular choices for students.

Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET) is a pan India test conducted by a consortium of 10 Central Universities, for selecting students in various programmes including UG, PG and PhD in the 10 participating universities.  These ten CUs are central universities of Haryana, Jammu, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, South Bihar, Rajasthan and Kerala.

Indian Institutes of Technologies (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) offer doctoral programmes. PhD students can try their luck and apply for these institutes. Most of these institutes offer fellowships as per Ministry of HRD rules to PhD scholars.

During the current session July 2017-18, SkillOutlook observed that the following university has advertised for large number PhD seats for admissions:  Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand and Technical University, Bhilai  (682 PhD seats), Punjab University, Chandigarh (482 PhD seats ), Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam (382 PhD seats), and Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla (224 PhD seats).

Among private universities, BITS Pilani, Manipal University, Amrita University, SRM University, etc conduct their own PhD entrance test for short listing candidates for research interview.
