Ahmedabad: The National Institute of Design (NID), a design school in Ahmedabad, India and an autonomous body under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, has invited applications from eligible candidates for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in design. The PhD programme will be offered in both full-time and part‐time basis. The full-time PhD will have minimum duration of three years. The part‐time PhD degree programme will have minimum duration of five years.

Selection Process: The entire selection will have three stages: Short-listing of Applications based on eligibility criteria and research proposal; Design Research Test (DRT); and Personal Interview.

Eligibility: Master’s degree from an accredited institution/recognized university in design or NID’s  PGDPD, AEPEP or 5-5½ year SLPEP diploma in design. Candidates with a master’s degree in areas relevant to design may also apply. The Institute shall notify a list of such areas from time to time.

OR

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution/recognized university in design

OR

NID’s GDPD or 4-4½ year SLPEP diploma in design, with at least 3 years of professional and/or teaching experience.

Candidates with bachelor’s degree in areas relevant to design may  also apply. The Institute shall notify a list of such areas from time to time.
Candidates who have successfully completed a faculty development course in design or related field (2 years or more duration) from NID or any other university recognized by the UGC/Institutes of National Importance shall be eligible to apply. They shall be treated at par with the Master’s level students.

An applicant with qualification in subjects other than Design (as notified by the Institute from time to time) shall be entitled to apply for admission to the PhD course provided that the applicant shall have demonstrated interest and aptitude for study of design, and shall qualify the Design Research Aptitude Test for PhD (DRAT-PhD).

Applicants currently employed in the public sector and seeking admission shall be required to submit a letter from their employer in support of the application. Upon admission the scholar shall be expected to fulfill the course requirements by personally attending the Institute.

Last date for submitting the application through email: 31 March 2017

Last date for submitting printed application forms accompanied with demand draft by hand, Speed post registered post or courier): 7 April 2017

Date of Design Research Test (DRT): 26 April 2017

Financial Assistance: Candidates enrolled in the full-time PhD programme will be eligible for a Research fellowship or a stipend at rates approved by the Senate of NID in the first year, PhD candidates will receive a stipend of Rs 25,000 per month, and of Rs 30,000 per month in the second and third year. Candidates spending more than three years on their PhD will not be eligible for continued stipend after the first three years.
