New Delhi:  In a new development that will have significant impact on the exam preparation of UGC-NET  aspirants, the University Grants Commission has officially clarified that it revises the procedure and criteria of qualifying candidates and as such it has been decided that 6% of the total candidates who appear in the UGC-NET examination will be declared qualified. The UGC has notified today (14 July 2017), which is uploaded on its official website.

Earlier the qualifying criteria for UGC-NET Exam involved qualifying top 15% of those candidates in each subject and category, who obtained the minimum required marks in paper-I, paper-II & paper-III according to the category of the candidates.

The National Eligibility Test (NET) is a pan India entrance test, which is used for determining the higher education teaching profession and is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on behalf of the UGC.

UGC has now decided that 6% of the candidates appearing for the NET will be declared as qualifying candidates and that the reservation policy be applied to this 6%.

The UGC has mentioned in the notification that subsequent to the orders of the Hon’ble High Court of Kerala, University Grants Commission had revised the procedure and criteria of qualifying candidates and as such it has been decided that 6% of the total candidates who appear in the UGC-NET examination will be declared qualified.

The qualifying percentage out of appeared candidates in the previous 4 UGC-NET examinations is given below:

Examination       Qualifying percentage out of Appeared

June 2015 UGC-NET :   4.83%

December 2015 UGC-NET :   4.96%

July 2016 UGC-NET :           4.08%

January 2017 UGC-NET :   3.99%

Future UGC-NET :  6.00%  (With revised qualifying criteria)

The UGC claimed that following the revised qualifying procedure the number of candidates who would qualify in the future NET Examinations is likely to increase.

 As the next UGC-NET exam will be held on 05 November 2017 (Sunday), the revised qualifying criteria will be applicable here.
