Boston:  Harvard Business School (HBS) Executive Education will launch Strategic Nonprofit Management—India on the campus of Ashoka University in India from July 31–August 4, 2017. Offered in association with Ashoka University and Dasra, India’s leading strategic philanthropy foundation, this new program will examine best practices in strategy, governance, and leadership for India’s nonprofit sector.

The nonprofit sector in South and Southeast Asia is vibrant and growing, with more than three million organizations registered in India alone. With the proper focus on mission, strategy, operations, and governance, senior leaders in India’s booming nonprofit sector have the potential to make significant progress in addressing diverse social challenges. This program will prepare nonprofit leaders to build and lead an organization capable of driving meaningful social change.

“Operating a nonprofit organization in an emerging economy like India’s presents senior leaders with many unique obstacles and opportunities,” said Frances Frei, UPS Foundation Professor of Service Management and Senior Associate Dean for Executive Education at Harvard Business School. “Social challenges – ranging from ensuring access to clean water to expanding educational opportunities – require thoughtful solutions. This program provides senior leaders with an opportunity to reflect on their organization’s direction and develop strategies for making a difference in their region.”

The program curriculum will analyze how nonprofit organizations in South and Southeast Asia have seized opportunities to create social impact. Participants will learn through case studies, faculty presentations, classroom discussions, small-group workshops, guest speakers, and panel discussions. Areas of focus will include establishing a focused mission and a disciplined approach to strategy, performance measurement and improvement, responsible governance, and effective leadership.

“We place a real emphasis on South and Southeast Asia in this program, with roughly two-thirds of our case studies based on organizations in the region,” said V. Kasturi Rangan, Malcolm P. McNair Professor of Marketing and faculty chair of Strategic Nonprofit Management—India. “Examining the practices of successful nonprofits in the region will enable participants to hone their management skills. Participants will return to work better equipped to define what success means for their organizations and develop the capabilities and external relationships they need to execute on their strategies.”

Strategic Nonprofit Management—India is designed for senior decision makers at nonprofit organizations operating in South and Southeast Asia. Typical participants will be executive directors, chief executive officers, board members, or other senior leaders of nonprofits, as well as executives who work closely with the nonprofit sector. This program is underwritten with generous financial support from Ashoka University. Nonprofits of all sizes and sectors are encouraged to apply.

As with other HBS Executive Education offerings, Strategic Nonprofit Management—India will rely on research from leading HBS faculty, discussions with industry peers, and learnings from real-world case studies from successful global companies.
