New Delhi: The University Grants Commission, the higher education regulator, has requested all universities to include AYUSH disciplines in their programmes for enrollment of candidates in the PhD and fellowship programmes. The UGC’s decision to include AYUSH subject in PhD programmes is in line with earlier advisory issued by the Ministry of AYUSH, Govemment of India, in this regard.

The Ministry of AYUSH in June 2016 requested the UGC to include AYUSH disciplines in their institutions for enrollment of candidates in the PhD programmes as Ministry of AYUSH has announced PhD programs in AYUSH disciplines from the concemed AYUSH Research Council. AYUSH has decided to sponsor annually 200 candidates (125 PG of AYUSH and 75 PG of Science & technology streams) for pursuing PhD on AYUSH research topics through five autonomous research organizations/councils.

AYUSH is aimed at developing Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) systems for healthcare of the people with scientific interventions. The Ministry has committed to encourage research in AYUSH systems for which five autonomous research organizations have been set up by the Central Govt. These organizations/councils are:

Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences

Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy

Central Council for Research in Yoga & Naturopathy

Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine and

Central Council for Research in Siddha

Here it can be mentioned that these councils conduct clinical and basic research studies in intra mural mode and also in collaboration with reputed scientific institutes. These councils further plan to augment research opportunities through PhD fellowship program for the development and promotion of AYUSH.

The UGC in a letter addressed to all vice-chancellors of universities has requested to incorporate AYUSH disciplines in the the University and in the affiliated colleges for enrollment of candidates in the PhD programmes and avail fellowship from the concerned AYUSH Research Council.
