Santa Cruz, CA/ Mumbai:  The worldwide developer population will reach 25 million by 2021, according to Evans Data’s recently released Global Developer Population and Demographics Report. Developer population in APAC (Asia Pacific) is growing at a faster pace than other regions led by India and China. The research report also mentioned that growth in India and China are expected to keep APAC’s developer population the highest globally for the next several years.

Decoding developers working in mobile applications, Evans estimated that developers currently creating mobile applications are estimated at 11.9 million. The number of developers who engage in Android first is 5.9 million while 2.8 million in iOS as a first platform globally. Most developers work on multiple mobile platforms, so secondary platform targets differ and often include competing platforms. The research report finds that Android is the most popular among developers in the APAC region while iOS is the most preferred among developers in North America.

“It’s interesting to watch the populations and the technology adoption curves rise around the world, but we have to recalibrate each year to take into account the ramifications of exogenous events” said Janel Garvin CEO of Evans Data. “For example, in our latest estimates from our spring secondary research, the model has predicted that growth of the developer population in the UK will be higher than in Germany and that the two developer populations will reach parity by 2021. However, UK’s recent decision regarding the EU could change that. That’s the sort of thing we will have to look into for the next forecast.”

The study, which is now in its 20th edition, estimates not only current software developer populations across four major regions and forty different countries, but also highlights and decodes their work areas and adoption of technologies now and in the future. The Global Developer Population and Demographics Study is published twice a year and contains developer population estimates by country and region as well as population numbers for developers adopting various technologies.
