New Delhi:  The Governing Body of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) at its 187 meeting held in the first week of October 2016 approved for launching a new scheme, CSIR-Industry Sponsored Research Fellowship Scheme.  Under the new scheme, the CSIR and Industry players both PSUs and Private sector companies will partner and collaborate to co-create scientific manpower (PhD candidates) in the mutual interest areas.

CSIR-Industry Sponsored Research Fellowship Scheme will have 100 fellowships over the next five years. The selection of the candidates will be based on CSIR-NET/GATE qualification and a valid certificate. Further, the selection of candidates will be done jointly by CSIR and Industry partners following mutually agreed selection procedure. As per the scheme features uploaded by CSIR, selected fellows will work under joint supervision of Guide (CSIR) and Co-Guide (Industry Partner).

The selection of industry partners will be done on the basis of credibility of the industry partners and theirs expertise and capabilities in the identified research domains.  The tenure of the fellowship will be five years. The CSIR informed that financial assistance will be given to fellows as per applicable CSIR-NET/GATE or higher agreed by the industry partner.

Fellows selected under the scheme, will be encouraged to register with AcSIR. However, they will be free to register for PhD at any recognized institution of their choice within the country. Here, it can mentioned that all the fellow candidates selected under the program will be governed by rules and regulations of CSIR-UGC NET Scheme.

The initial the scheme documents of CSIR said that the eligible industry partners include both public and private companies (excluding proprietary and partnership firms), foundations, trusts, and societies registered in the country. The basic aim of the program is to build scientific talent and close engagement with industry partners to co-create manpower (PhD) with advanced training in niche areas of mutual interests.

Currently, CSIR-Human Resource Development Group is implementing multiple fellowship/Associateship schemes under which financial assistance are offered to eligible candidates: Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)/ Senior Research Fellowship (SRF)/ Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Fellowship (CSIR-SPMF) / Research Associateship (RA)/ Senior Research Associateship (SRAs)/CSIR-Nehru PDF and others.
