IIT Bombay: PhD Programmes (Spring Semester, AY: 2016 ­17), last date of submission application is 14 October 2016

Mumbai: The deadline for applying PhD  Programmes (Spring Semester, Academic Year: 2016 ­17) of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay is 14 October 2016.  IIT Bombay has already invited online applications for admission to the PhD Programmes (starting from January, 2017) from 1 September 2016.

PhD admissions are available for research areas of the following disciplines: Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Earth Sciences, Energy Science & Engineering Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering & Materials Science, Physics, Biosciences & Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Humanities & Social Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Systems & Control Engineering, Industrial Engineering & Operations Research, Climate Studies, and Environmental Science & Engineering.

Further, PhD admissions are open under different programmes of IIT Bombay’s Centre of Studies in Resources Engineering, Centre for Research in Nanotechnology & Science, Centre for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas, and Centre for Urban Science and Engineering, and Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management.

Financial Support schemes:

For full-time research scholar, the Institute offers PhD candidates the following scholarship schemes:

i.Teaching Assistantship (TA)

ii.Teaching Assistantship through Project (TAP)

iii.Govt./Semi Govt. Fellowship Award (FA: QIP, CSIR, UGC, DAE, DST, DBT, NBHM, etc.)

iv.Sponsored Candidates (SW)

v.Self­Financed, including those on Study Leave (SF)

vi.Foreign Nationals with Indian Council for Cultural Relation Award (ICCR)

vii.Self­Financed Foreign Nationals (FRN­SF)

viii.Foreign Nationals with Teaching Assistantship (FRN­TA)

Details on Teaching Assistantship (TA):  Students under this category are entitled to financial support as per MHRD norms.

i.For students with M.Tech./M.E. or equivalent degree as the qualifying degree, the assistantship is payable for a maximum duration of 5 years or up to the thesis submission, whichever is earlier. At present, the monthly rate of assistantship is Rs. 25,000/­ for the first 2 years and enhanced rate of Rs. 28,000/­ for the remaining period.

ii.For students with B.Tech./B.E. or equivalent degree and students with M.Sc./M.A./M.Com. or equivalent as the qualifying degree and having valid GATE score or having Junior Research fellowship (JRF) of UGC/CSIR/NBHM/DBT or DST INSPIRE fellowship, the assistantship is payable for a maximum duration of 5 years or up to the thesis submission, whichever is earlier. At present, the monthly rate of assistantship is Rs. 25,000/­ for the first two years and enhanced rate of Rs.28,000/­ for the remaining period.

As per the guideline for Teaching Assistantship, the students concerned must assist in teaching or research, as assigned by the respective Academic Unit to the extent of 8 hours of work per week. The continuation of the assistantship will be subject to satisfactory performance of the duties assigned by the Academic Units as well as satisfactory academic performance. Employees on the rolls (with or without pay) of any organization are not eligible for admission under this category.

Other scholarship schemes are also available as per eligibility norms for PhD programmes (Regular): Govt./Semi Govt. Fellowship Award (FA: QIP, CSIR, UGC, DAE, DST, DBT, NBHM, etc.).
