Bhubaneswar: In a major achievement for Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KIIS), Bhubaneswar, the institute has now been recognized as University status becoming the first Exclusive Tribal University in the World. KIIS has informed today (26 August 2017) in a press statement that the Ministry of HRD has granted the Deemed University status.

In India there is another Tribal University, Indira Gandhi Tribal University; however, here all categories of students get admission. KIIS, Bhubaneswar is an institute where all students belong to tribal community. Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) is a residential institute for the tribals, providing accommodation, food, health care, education from Kindergarten to Post Graduation, vocational training and all other basic amenities of life free.

Dr Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIS, thanked Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi , HRD Minister Mr Prakash Javadekar, Chief Minister of Odisha Mr Naveen Patnaik, Union Tribal Affairs Minister Mr Jual Oram, and Union Petroleum & Natural Gas  Minister Mr Dharmendra Pradhan.

KIIS was founded in 1992-93 with 125 poor tribal students. Now there are more than 27,000 students are studying in the institute with more than 10,000 students passed out from the institute. Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences  (KISS), Bhubaneswar, India is a fully free, fully residential home for 27,000 poorest of the poor indigenous children who are provided holistic education from Kindergarten to Post Graduation along with lodging, boarding, health care facilities besides vocational, life skill empowerment.
