New  Delhi: Adulterated and unhygienic food items served at the canteens/messes and other food establishments of Universities and affiliated colleges will be dealt seriously, said the University Grants Commission. The UGC has directed to all universities that they should ensure the implementation of the  Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Hence, Universities and higher educational institutes will monitor and check  the canteens/messes and other food establishments whether they are working under the statutory framework of the Food Safety & Standards (Licensing & Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAD) would also organize training of food vendors working in the food establishments of the educational institutions to provide safe and wholesome food to the students. The circular issued by the UGC also said that universities can directly contact the FSSAI, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi for the same.

The UGC has observed it has been noted that some canteens/messes and other food establishments located in various educational institutions have not been licensed under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
