New Delhi:  There are 50 Central Universities in India.  There are a large scale vacant posts exist at both teaching and non-teaching posts. The acute shortage of faculty is affecting quality of education.

Nearly 7,000 teaching posts are remaining vacant in these central universities.  Out of these, 934 posts have been filled up.

Out of these vacant posts, 2,753 positions for Assistant Professor. Meanwhile 1,483 posts are lying vacant for Professors and 2452 for Associate Professors. At  Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) 190 faculty posts are vacant.

Answering a question in Lok Sabha on 03 February 2020, the Union HRD Minister Mr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said that University Grants Commission has prepared the Guidelines for Recruitment of Faculty in Universities, Colleges and Institutions Deemed to be Universities outlining the selection procedure and the time frame for recruitment which has been circulated to all Universities to adhere to the guidelines. The Universities have also been requested to take steps to ensure that the vacancies in the Universities are filled up at the earliest.

The Minister informed the House that the appointment of teachers in Central Universities is done under the rules and byelaws of the concerned Universities.
