New Delhi: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), a statutory body established under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 entered its Platinum Jubilee Year on July 1, 2018 after completing 69 years of glorious journey. During the Platinum Jubilee Year, ICAI will showcase before the world the proud moments of the profession, milestones crossed, achievements in present and also the growing potential of the profession in future.
Every year, the ICAI organizes Annual Convocation to award certificates of membership to new members and facilitate rank holders of the CA examinations. The Convocation was organized in all the 5 Regions i.e. East, West, North, South& Central Region of ICAI on September 2, 2018 across the Country. General Ved Prakash Malik, (Retd.), PVSM, AVSM who was the Chief of Indian Army during the Kargil War, was the ‘Chief Guest’ at the function.
Speaking at the event at New Delhi, addressing the newly qualified budding professionals, Chief Guest General Ved Prakash Malik said “Being a CA means a great deal today in our country and ICAI being the second largest accounting body in the world has done a commendable job of being a partner in the economic journey of the country and in nation building. I congratulate all the budding CA’s and wish them all the best in their future endeavor”.
Naveen N.D. Gupta, President, ICAI encouraging the new CA member said: “With the opening up of world economy, newer professional avenues are coming in our way. As Chartered Accountants, we need to continue offering our professional competence and expertise in the best interests of our country. ICAI has established mutual co-operation framework for the advancement of accounting knowledge, professional and intellectual development, advancing the interests of Indian Chartered Accountants and positively contributing to the development of the accounting profession. As of now, Indian CA Qualification is recognized by global bodies having presence in 5 continents & ICAI will continue to promote the Indian CA profession abroad.”
The function was attended by approx. 2460 participants at New Delhi and a total of 9846 Chartered Accountants have been conferred with Membership Certificate in the Convocation organized today across the Country. The ICAI conducts Convocation twice every year for award of Certificate of Membership to newly enrolled Members as bonhomie to the CA fraternity. The Convocation is intended to bring young members of the profession under the umbrella of the fraternity of Chartered Accountants and foster a sense of belongingness to the profession and the Institute.
Over the years, the role of ICAI has evolved and expanded to meet changing needs and new challenges. Today, ICAI has grown manifold and has created a vast pool of Chartered Accountants, essential for practically every sphere of the country’s economy, industry, business and good governance. The Institute would continue to provide guidance for the growth of profession in line with changing requirements of stakeholders and enable full utilization of capacities of the Indian professionals at National as well as International level.
The Institute functions under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India. Started in 1949 with about 1700 members, ICAI is a prominent accounting body in the country and the second largest accounting body in the world with over 2.85 lakh members. ICAI has 5 Regional Councils and 164 branches all across the country with over 8 lakh students. In addition, it has also set up 32 chapters outside India and an overseas office in Dubai.
