GUWAHATI : Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has launched a unique M. Tech. degree program in Robotics and Artificial intelligence, designed for both fresh graduates and working professionals aiming to enhance their skills on AI-driven robotics systems. Offered by the School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Sustainability, this degree program will be conducted in hybrid mode (online classes, with on-campus labs and final exams on IIT Guwahati campus). The program is designed to bridge multiple engineering disciplines for development in sectors such as agriculture, defense, manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, and smart infrastructure, among others.

A key highlight of the program is that no GATE score is needed to apply for the same. Candidates will be selected based on the written test/ interview conducted by the Institute.
Speaking about the program, Prof. Hemant B. Kaushik, Dean, Outreach Education and Skilling, IIT Guwahati, said, “The program addresses the growing demand for expertise in intelligent systems, offering cutting-edge, interdisciplinary learning in machine learning, computer vision, and robotics through a flexible format. - All classes will be conducted in online mode and will be recorded for the students to learn at their own pace
- Final examinations will be conducted on IIT Guwahati campus
The minimum duration of the program will be 2 years, with the flexibility to extend it to a maximum of 5 years allowing the students to balance their studies and professional commitments.
Throughout the program, the students will be able to visit the IIT Guwahati campus to connect with experts, gain hands-on training in various relevant fields, and receive support from faculty members for their project work.
In addition to this, the program allows students to exit at different stages with recognised certifications. These include:
- After completion of core courses (2 – 4 trimesters) – PG Certificate in Basics in Robotics & Artificial Intelligence
- After completion of all core and elective courses (4 – 6 trimesters) – PG Diploma in Robotics & Artificial Intelligence
- After competition of all courses + 1 Capstone Project (4 – 10 trimesters) – Master of Science (Engineering) in Robotics & Artificial Intelligence
- After completion of all courses & Capstone Projects (6 – 15 trimesters) – MTech in Robotics & Artificial Intelligence
Students who exit at PG Certificate, Diploma, or Master of Science degree stage can rejoin after a one-year gap to continue their education.
Eligibility criteria and Admission process:
- 4-year or 5-year Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science, Mechanical, Production, Civil, IT, Design or related disciplines or a Master’s degree in relevant fields, with at least 60% marks or 6.0/10 CPI in class XII (or equivalent)
- Must have studied Mathematics at least up to Class 12 level.
The program will also give students a chance to work on real-world problems with industry experts after completing the core courses. Students will be required to use their knowledge in practical situations, get hands-on experience, and build problem-solving skills relevant to actual industry challenges.
With expertise in advanced mechanical design and control theory with cutting-edge AI, the graduates of this program will have deep rooted knowledge and understanding of Robot Kinematics, Dynamics, and Control, Machine learning & Deep learning, and Computer vision & perception. They will be well-prepared for diverse roles such as robotics engineer, AI/ML engineer, computer vision specialist, automation engineer, data scientist, and intelligent systems researcher across industry, academia, and emerging technology sectors.
