New Delhi: All IITs saw the highest number of patent fillings in 2019-20 over the last five years. A total number 726 patents have been filed by IITs in 2019-20 while 599 patents filed by IITs in 2015-16.
Union HRD Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said “Number of patents published by IITs in last 5 years reflect and support our approach towards New India and India is entering a technologically advanced era through incredible #innovations.”
In 2019-20, IIT Madras, Delhi, Mumbai are the flag bearers of patent revolution in India. IIT Madras filed the highest patents with 186 in 2019-20. IIT Delhi filed 152 patents while IIT Bombay filed 135 patents in the same year.
The Union Minister said that promoting research & innovation will ultimately help in resolving the societal & governmental problems of our country in the best possible way.
The older IITs have the advantage of having more students enrolled in their PhD programmes and are also publishing more research papers.
For instance in 2019-20, IIT Mumbai awarded 385 PhDs, while IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur gave 375 and 372 respectively. IIT Delhi awarded 331 PhDs in 2019-20.
