Roorkee, 25th May 2018: Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee Alumnus, Mr. Anubhav Singh, has secured the All India Rank No: 8 in the Civil Services Examination 2017 conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. A graduate of Civil Engineering (2015 Batch) from IIT Roorkee, he had also cleared the UPSC in an earlier attempt and was undergoing training in Indian Revenue Service (IRS).

Mr. Anubhav Singh (23 years) completed his schooling from a Government Primary School in Daser village in Allahabad district, Uttar Pradesh.

Talking about his experience, Mr. Singh, said, “I would say that 4 years of my life spent in IIT Roorkee was the best phase of my life, which prepared me adequately to take on challenges and serve our society and country. I started preparing from the third year of my graduation and simultaneously worked on my English as I was educated in Hindi medium.”

Speaking about the achievement of his student, Prof Bhola R. Gurjar, Professor, Civil Engineering Department, and Dean of Resources and Alumni Affairs, IIT Roorkee, said, “Anubhav has been a very calm, composed and sincere student. I recall his brief but elegant and convincing arguments during Communication Skills classes that I coordinated for his batch.”

Speaking about his preparation for UPSC, Mr. Anubhav Singh said, “I tried to strike a balance between enjoyment and preparation. I think it is necessary to keep your mind off from preparation-related things for some time. Spending quality time with close friends and family members is very important for reducing stress and anxiety.”

Mr. Singh believes that due to the increasing competition, Prelims have become very demanding and unpredictable and recommended multiple readings of standard textbooks. Regarding Essay strategy, he suggested that new aspirants look on essays written by top scorers and analyse them on content and structure.

The essays in part A are generally concrete topics relating to economy, society, polity etc. For this part one should focus on reading magazines. On the other hand, topics in part B are philosophical in nature. For this part, he suggests reading some classical literature to develop abstract and critical thinking.

A native of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, he had his Primary and Middle school education in his village of Daser. For Class IX, he moved to Allahabad city and completed his secondary education. He cleared the JEE in 2011 and was allocated Civil Engineering at IIT Roorkee. It was a moment of pride and satisfaction for his family and friends as IIT Roorkee has an illustrious past of Civil Engineering.

Further, Mr. Singh says, “The overall infrastructure of IIT Roorkee including the hostels, academic departments, and library were world class. I stayed for long hours in the library as it was well maintained with a great collection of books.”

“Regarding the Civil Engineering Department of IIT Roorkee, I have only one word to say: unparalleled. It has one of the best faculty members and research infrastructure in the country. I feel honoured to have studied under such great professors in such an illustrious department,” he added.

Apart from academic facilities, the institute has one of the best facilities in sports. The beauty of campus is unmatched among IITs.
