VARANASI : Banaras Hindu University celebrated its 109th Foundation Day with great enthusiasm and exuberance on Vasant Panchami, the day when the varsity was founded in the year 1916. Members of the BHU fraternity participated in celebrations as the entire campus wore festive look. The festivities began with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sudhir Kumar Jain performing puja at the foundation stone of the university. Senior functionaries of the university including Registrar Prof. Arun Kumar Singh, Dean of Students Prof. Anupam Kumar Nema, directors of institutes, deans of faculties, and officers also participated in the puja. In his message to the BHU community, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sudhir Kumar Jain exhorted them to commit themselves for the all-round development of the students. He said that one of the core objectives behind the establishment of BHU was the holistic growth of students, hence, as teachers it is our duty to ensure academic, intellectual, and professional development of students. The Vice-Chancellor added that if any of our students deviated from the right path, as teachers and as institution, we should be concerned about that. He called for constructive and positive engagement and involvement of students in activities that help them grow professionally as well as individually, and contribute as a responsible member of the society and a citizen. The vice-chancellor said that Malaviya ji was of the view that students should not be confined to their specific departments or faculties, rather they should get involved in multi-faceted education and activities. Prof. Jain said that the New Education Policy 2020 paves the way for multi-disciplinary education and we must take full advantage of the opportunity to help students grow and excel. He said that BHU can take lead in this direction and be an example for others.

The Foundation Day celebration was marked by a spectacular procession comprising tableaux from various institutes, faculties, and schools on the theme of “Viksit Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”. The tableaux presented the rich and diverse heritage of Banaras Hindu University as well as the glimpse of India’s rise on the global stage.

The procession comprised thirty one tableaux with students making exhilarating cultural performances in an impressive fashion. It was a remarkable mix of creativity, enthusiasm and their love for BHU. The key themes that were showcased in the tableaux included ancient Indian knowledge, India’s rich cultural heritage and diversity, country’s economic triumph as well as science and technological advancements, environmental protection, medical achievements, Digital India, women empowerment, Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha, G20 summit in India, and others. Prof. Panjab Singh, Former Vice-Chancellor of BHU was the chief guest on the occasion. The jhankis also displayed the life and values of BHU’s revered founder Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya Ji.
