In 2020, the International Labour Organization (ILO) reported that around 267 million young people globally were NEET (not in employment, education, or training), emphasizing the urgent need to invest in youth skills amid the pandemic-induced youth unemployment crisis. Educationist and founder of TreeHouse chain of schools, Rajesh Bhatia believes India’s youth must enhance their skills to achieve personal and professional success and on World Youth Skills Day (July 15th), offers a roadmap to students to maximise their potential with skill development.

An overview:

Engage in Self-Discovery

Self-awareness always plays a significant role in the development of skills and personality. An objective analysis of core strengths and weaknesses, exploring personal interests and passions can help students to identify their life path. Career counselling can also give them an insight into academic and professional avenues, ultimately enabling them to make informed career choices in line with their abilities and aspirations.

Focus on holistic skills

In an era of rapid digital transformation, upskilling and reskilling are needed for relevance and employability in the job market. However the significance of life skills goes beyond just securing a job. Life skills and holistic development contribute to personal growth and overall development of personality. Students who possess diverse skill sets and have soft skills like empathy, patience, communication skills and creativity, are more confident and better equipped to deal with the challenges at work and in life. By continuously taking on new projects, hobbies, expanding knowledge, learning from experiences and mistakes, individuals can broaden their horizons and unlock their full potential.

Harness the power of practical skills

One of the biggest reasons behind India’s unemployment crisis is the gap between academic proficiency and employability. This is why academic curriculums must equip students with the practical knowledge and skills which will serve them well once they leave schools and colleges to step into the real world. Exposure to real-world scenarios is instrumental in cultivating practical skills relevant to students’ chosen fields. By actively seeking internships, volunteering opportunities, and other experiential learning opportunities, students can bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, thereby bolstering their employability.

The importance of soft skills

As mentioned before, the importance of soft skills cannot be overemphasised in today’s work environments. While technical expertise is crucial, soft skills form the bedrock of success in any enterprise. Effective communication, an acumen for teamwork, problem-solving and innovation can give individuals an edge over their peers. This is why schools must encourage students to engage in public speaking, team-building exercises, social initiatives and volunteering to gain a deeper understanding of interpersonal dynamics and society.

Be a lifelong learner

Learning should not cease after acquiring a degree but must continue as an enduring pursuit throughout life. A curious and open mind can increase receptivity to new ideas and present new opportunities for growth. By attending online courses, workshops, and seminars and cultivating a mindset of lifelong learning, individuals can stay ahead in an ever-evolving world.
