New Delhi:  The total number of universities in India now stands at 920, as on 01 November 2019. Out of these, 340 are Private Universities, approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC).  The private university is one of fastest growing institute category approved by the UGC over the last few years.

There are 404 Universities are State Universities, generally known as Public Universities. 126 are Deemed to be Universities.

The number of Central Universities stand at 50. Central universities or union universities in India are established by an Act of Parliament and are under the purview of the Department of Higher Education in the Union Human Resource Development Ministry.

The Institute of National Importance category higher educational stands at 127.

Within two years, the number of universities jumped by nearly 100. As on 29 June 2017, the total universities was 821.
