Guwahati, March 06: In another proud moment for the University as well as the state, the patent application for the invention of two faculty members, of Assam down town University (AdtU) and Assam Engineering College (AEC) respectively, has been published. The invention of Mr. Manash Jyoti Borah, Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering, AdtU and Dr. Niharendu Saha, Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering, AEC – System and Method for Double Spot Friction Stir Welding and Double Spot Zigzag Friction Stir Welding – aims to be an alternative of rivets. This is the first patent from Assam down town University.
It may be mentioned here that many researchers and scholars are presently working on friction stir spot welding.
To increase the strength and efficiency of the friction weld, the inventors have come out with an idea to develop Double Spot Friction Stir Welding, and Double Spot Zigzag Friction Stir welding is being introduced where two rows of spot weld is present. “Since no consumables are used for joining process, therefore this method will be an easy way to join many household utensils mostly kitchen utensils which will help the small scale industries” says Mr. Manash Jyoti Borah.
“Objectives of the invention are to increase the strength of the friction stir spot welding sample from low cost and to make Friction stir spot welding easier and reliable. Along with these, this method can be alternative of rivets” informed Borah. “This type of welds can be used for joining Kitchen utensils or light metals” he added.
