Roorkee, India   – The Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, successfully organized the International Conference on Geomatics in Civil Engineering (ICGCE) 2024. The conference, spanning two insightful days, was held in loving memory of the late Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ghosh, the visionary behind this initiative.

Distinguished participants from various universities, institutes, seasoned industry experts, academicians, and policymakers congregated to exchange ideas and deliberate on the pivotal role of Geomatics in diverse domains of Civil Engineering. Prof. Saurabh Vijay warmly welcomed the participants, highlighting the significance of innovation and sustainable practices in Geomatics engineering.

The Chief Patron, Honorable Director IIT Roorkee, Prof. K. K. Pant, addressed the conference, emphasizing the potential of sustainable, nature-based solutions enabled through cutting-edge Geomatics Engineering technologies such as radar, earth observation, and digital twins. Unveiling the conference proceedings, conference Patron Prof. Praveen Kumar, Head of Department, Civil Engineering, shed light on the role of Geomatics in addressing real-world civil engineering challenges.

The conference featured enlightening presentations by esteemed speakers. Prof. Bryan Mark showcased the applicability of drone mapping and drone-based Ground Penetrating Radar in high-altitude environments like the Himalayas. Guest speaker Mrs. Bharti Sinha shared insights on women’s participation in engineering, research, and development, while Dr. Yogita Shukla emphasized the importance of Green credits for creating sustainable cities and communities.

Various topics were discussed, including mapping glaciers through drones, career planning for researchers, green credit for a regenerative society, insights into the “Namami Gange” project, urban flood mapping, building footprint extraction, hydrologic modeling, heatwave forecasting and analysis, and deep learning models in autonomous vehicles.

Noteworthy presentations included Mr. Dheeraj Joshi’s insights on the “Namami Gange” project, focusing on Multi-Hazard Risk analysis for railways, and Mr. Peeyush Gupta, Chief Technical Officer of the “National Mission for Clean Ganga,” who elucidated the role of Geospatial technologies in the project and emphasized data dissemination for young researchers and academicians.

The conference concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, where the Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ghosh Memorial Award was bestowed upon the overall best presenters. Prof. Praveen Kumar expressed gratitude to all participants, stakeholders, and organizers for their contributions in making the event a resounding success.
