The curriculum of NMIMS School of Performing Arts’ recently-introduced BA Music (Indian Music) program is a unique synthesis of the ancient Gurukul method of music with modern technical needs. SoPA facilitates a pedagogical approach that combines theory with practice to train students for concerts, studio performances, and other events. Music baithaks and workshops are also organised, to help students develop their skills and broaden their musical horizons, setting SoPA’s curriculum apart from others. As an additional element, special measures have also been incorporated, to encourage and facilitate critical thinking on the part of students, in order to recognise and assimilate music in its true extent and dimension.
Commenting on the merits of the programs, Dr. Ramesh Bhat, Vice Chancellor, SVKM’s NMIMS, School of Performing Arts, said, “At NMIMS, we believe in always staying ahead of the curve. Our undergraduate program in western contemporary music is the first such program being offered in India. Now we have also introduced BA Music (Indian Music) for aspirants. Both programs have been designed with small batch sizes and a low student-teacher ratio, to facilitate greater individual attention to our students and to help them optimize their learning outcomes. Our faculty members include eminent musicians and performers, who familiarize and help expose our students to current industry trends.”
Speaking about the program, Dr. Divya Shrivastava, Dean, NMIMS School of Performing Arts, further added “Music is an integral part of our life, today’s youth prefer to follow their creative passions, whether music, art or any other stream. Both our programs – BA Music (Western Contemporary Music) and BA Music (Indian Music) have been meticulously structured for students passionate about music, and provide the perfect launch pad for them to establish a successful professional career in the industry. Our faculty includes top artistes and academics from across the globe, and we also provide opportunities to our students to interact with luminaries from the music industry through frequent master classes and workshops. Our state-of-the-art studios and music labs help equip our students with the best training and creative experience.”
