Union Cabinet Approves to Establish a Central University in Ladakh

 

New Delhi, 22 July 2021: Union Cabinet has today approved to set up Central University of Ladakh (CUL). This will be first Central University in the Union Territory of Ladakh.  The total fund allocation for CUL is Rs 750.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur said Central University of Ladakh will address regional imbalances in education as the newly carved union territory does not have top-class higher educational institutions.

There are two central varsities in Kashmir region and Jammu region, which are operational. The third one in Ladakh will cater aspirational demand of students from Leh and Kargil.

Central universities or union universities in India are established by an Act of Parliament and are under the purview of the Department of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education.

Currently, there are more than 50 Central Universities in India.
