New Delhi, 12 October 2021: The University Grants Commission (UGC), the regulator for Higher Education, has extended the date of applicability of PhD as a mandatory qualification for recruitment of Assistant Professors in Universities and Colleges from 01 July 2021 to 01 July 2023.

As per the UGC (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and other measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) Regulations 2018, PhD degree shall be mandatory qualification for direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professors in universities from 01 July 2021.

Amid COVID 19, the UGC has extended the date of applicability of PhD as mandatory qualification for direct recruitment of Assistant Professors from 01 July 2021 to 01 July 2023. The UGC has released an amendment to the aforesaid regulations in the Gazette on 11 October 2021.

According to existing the UGC Faculty Recruitment norms, candidates who qualify for teacher eligibility exams including NET, SET, SLET are eligible to apply for the post of assistant professor. Candidates who have been awarded a PhD degree in accordance with UGC regulations will be exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET/SET.
