Guwahati, 31 October 2021: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, an Institute of National Importance, has opened PhD Admission for December 2021 Session.  The total number of PhD Seats available are 294 for the December 2021 session.   

The PhD Programmes are available for the following types: Regular and Full Time, Sponsored and Full Time, Employed and Part Time, Self-Financed and Full Time, Self-Financed and Part Time, Project Staff and Full Time, Project Staff and Part Time, External and Part Time, and Self-Financed and Full Time Foreign Students.

For receiving assistantship in PhD programmes in all disciplines, candidates must qualify a national level examination like GATE, CEED, UGC/CSIR NET-JRF in addition to meeting the minimum eligibility criteria for the respective disciplines as specified in the following:

For admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

1.Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences/Veterinary Sciences/Pharmacy in a relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of either 6.0 or 60% of marks.

2.Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of either 7.0 or 70% of marks.

Alternative Eligibility Criteria for PhD programme in the Department of Civil Engineering:

1.A candidate having a Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area, with a Postgraduate Degree in Management Science(Finance) or MBA with Finance specialization or equivalent, is also considered for admission in the area of specialization ‘Construction Management’, of the Department of Civil Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of either 6.0 CPI or 60% marks in Bachelor’s level and either 6.0 CPI or 60% marks in the postgraduate degree.

2.A candidate having MSc degree with Mathematics as a subject at bachelor’s level is also considered for admission in the Department of Civil Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of either 7.0 CPI or 70% marks in Master’s level with consistent first class at other levels.

Alternative Eligibility Criteria for PhD programme in the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering:

1.A candidate having a Two-year Master’s degree (after completion of 4-year Bachelor’s degree) or three-year Master’s degree (after completion of 3-year Bachelor’s degree) in Engineering/ Technology/Science in a relevant area with minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of either 6.0 or 60% of marks is also considered for admission in to PhD Programme in Biosciences and Bioengineering.

2.A candidate with a Two-year MSc degree (after completion of 3-year Bachelor’s degree) in a relevant area with minimum CPI of either 6.0 or 60% marks, is also considered for admission in to PhD Programme in Biosciences and Bioengineering.

Alternative Eligibility Criteria for PhD programme in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering:

1.Postgraduates in Computer Science (ALCCS) from Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE), with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of either 6.0 or 60% of marks, are also eligible to apply for admission in to PhD programme in Computer Science and Engineering.

2.An MTech graduate from the Computer Science and Engineering Department of IIT Guwahati, up to a period of 2 (two) years from his/her completing the programme, with a minimum CPI of 8.0 in course work, may be considered for direct admission into the PhD programme in the Computer Science and Engineering Department.

3.A candidate having 3-year bachelor’s degree in CS/IT/M&C/Maths/Data Science as major and 2-year MSc degree in CS/IT/M&C/Maths/Data Science with minimum CPI of either 6.0 or 60% of marks and valid GATE score in CS are also eligible to apply for admission into PhD programme in Computer Science and Engineering.

Alternative Eligibility Criteria for PhD programme in the Department of Mechanical Engineering:

A candidate with medical qualification viz., MBBS / BDS / MD / MS / BVSc / MVSc having 60% marks OR Allied health care professional degrees viz., Masters in Physiotherapy / Prosthetics and Orthotics / Occupational Therapy having 60% marks in both bachelor degree and master degree is eligible for PhD programme in Mechanical Engineering.

Relaxation for SC/ST/PwD Candidates: Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PwD applicants.

Eligibility Requirement for Applying to PhD in Sciences

1.To apply for admission to the PhD Programme in Science Departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

2.Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.0 out of 10 or minimum 60% of marks.

3.Master’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of either 6.0 out of 10 or minimum 60% of marks.

4.Four-year Bachelor’s degree in a related area in Engineering/ Technology/ Design/ Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0 out of 10 or minimum 70% of marks.

Relaxation for SC/ST/PwD Candidates: Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PwD applicants.

Eligibility Requirement for Applying to PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences, and Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems

For admission to the PhD Programme in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), and Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

1. Master’s degree in Arts/Commerce/Science in a relevant area with a minimum of either 5.5 CPI or 55% marks or equivalent.
2. Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of either 6.0 or 60% marks.
3. Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Design or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of either 7.0 or 70% marks.
4. For receiving assistantship in PhD programmes in Humanities and Social Sciences, and Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems, candidates qualifying UGC/CSIR-NET Lectureship (Assistant Professorship) are also eligible.

Stipend for PhD Regular Full Time: At present, the Institute provides monthly assistantship of Rs. 31,000 for the first two years and RS.35,000 for the next three years to our regular full time PhD students.

They receive Financial Assistantship/ Scholarship from IIT Guwahati or Fellowship from CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency.
