Mumbai, 25 July 2021: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, an Institute of National Importance, generally accepts PhD Applications twice a year (i.e. Autumn Semester (July session) and Spring Semester (January session)).
For the Academic Year 2021-22, IIT Bombay has announced the total PhD intake seats are 431. Computer Science & Engineering will have 26 seats while Electrical Engineering will have 38 PhD seats for 2021-22. The sanctioned strength for Humanities & Social Sciences department is 22 seats.
For regular PhD Programmes, scholars are eligible for Institute Fellowships, popularly known as Half-Time Research Assistantship (HTRA) funded by Ministry of Education.
For the next session, Spring Semester (January session 2022) session, IIT Bombay will tentatively open application portal for PhD Admission on 03 September 2021.

IIT Bombay is one of the few institutions in India that can offer PMRF Fellowship to meritorious Ph.D. candidates at the time of admission into the Ph.D. program. PMRF fellows get a monthly stipend of Rs 70,000 along with an annual contingency grant of Rs 2 Lakh. To apply for PMRF, the candidate needs to get selected in our regular Ph.D. programme, and the Institute will recommend selected few candidates (with high academic credentials and demonstrated potential for research) for PMRF.
