Bangalore, 14 September 2025: The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) is a premier institute devoted to research in astronomy, astrophysics and related physics. In collaboration with the Pondicherry University (PU), IIA runs IIA-PU PhD programme.
This is a full-time research programme where in the students work towards their Ph.D. degree under the supervision of an IIA faculty member.
IIA conducts two Ph.D. programmes, (a) IIA-PU Ph.D. Programme and (b) IIA-CU Integrated M.Tech – Ph.D. (Tech.) Programme in Astronomical Instrumentation.
IIA invites applications for PhD Admission for January 2025. Research areas include astronomy, astrophysics and related areas of physics.
The stipend of a JRF is Rs. 37,000/- pm, and of an SRF is Rs. 42,000/- pm in addition to an annual book grant and medical facilities. Upon submission of the Ph.D. thesis the fellowship may be further increased to 46,000/- pm.

You may apply if :
(a) you have qualified for JRF in the CSIR/UGC-NET exam in Physics (2024, 2025), or
(b) scored 95.00 percentile or above in the JEST (2025) exam in Physics, or
(c) scored 95.00 percentile or above in GATE (2025) exam in Physics
Note: Scores must be valid at the time of admission.
- IMPORTANT: Our admission criteria also require the candidate to have scored an aggregate of 60% marks or above throughout his/her academic career.
- Age Limit: Maximum 28 years as of 31st January, 2026.
