New Delhi, 10 February 2022: There are large vacant seats exist in Research programmes such as Master’s and PhD courses in the Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institutes of Information Technology, reflecting a waste of research opportunities at these premier institutes.
The premier engineering colleges like IITs, NITs and IIITs impart education and research in science and technology subjects and categorised as Institute of National Importance.
In 2021-22, a total 5,296 seats were vacant in 23 IITs. Out of these, only 362 seats were vacant in UG programmes. At PG Levels – MTech, MSc, Joint Degree Programmes, MBA, etc- 3083 seats were laying vacant in IITs. At PhD Levels, 1852 seats faced vacancies in 2021-22 in all IITs. This is definitely missing opportunities.
Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Education, shared the above information while replying a question in the Rajya Sabha yesterday.

At PG Levels – MTech, MSc, Joint Degree Programmes, MBA, etc- 3,413 seats were vacant. At PhD Levels, 914 seats faced vacancies in 2021-22 in all NITs. This is definitely missing opportunities.
