Tiruchirappalli, 04 July 2021: National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappalli, Top NIT as per NIRF 2020, has invited applications from eligible candidates for admission to PhD for July 2021 session.
There are four types of PhD programmes available for admission:
(a) Full-Time: (i) Half-Time Research Assistantship (HTRA), and (ii) Externally Funded
(b) Part-Time: In-Service (i) Internal and (ii) External
Total PhD Seats: There are 17 departments offering PhD Programmes. The total number of PhD Seats with Institute Fellowships are 146 (Full Time-Stipendiary Category).
Key Dates & Application Fees: The closing date for submission of online application is 09 July 2021. The application fee is Rs. 500/- for OC/OBC-NCL and Rs. 200/- for SC/ST/PwD candidates.

For the category Full-Time HTRA: Candidates selected under this category will be called as either LATERAL (those already possessing masters’ degrees), or DIRECT (those who have just completed their B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch.). Both LATERAL and DIRECT candidates are admitted through the same process – screening, written-test* and interview, and they compete for the admission equally.
All the 17 departments of the institute admit candidates in this category, and selected candidates are eligible to receive the Half-Time Research Assistantship (HTRA).
For all the 4 categories (full- and part-times), the mode and norms for selection shall be uniform. Following the scrutiny and short-listing of the applications, eligible candidates will be called to attend a written test. The conduct of written test will be based on the number of applications received and the prevailing pandemic situation.

Fellowship Benefits: Half Time Research Assistantship (HTRA) is available to full time scholars who are admitted to PhD programmes in different departments subject to the availability as stipulated by Ministry of Human Resources Development. The award and renewal of the assistantship / scholarship is as per the guidelines issued by MHRD, from time to time. The recipients of HTRA are required to assist the department in academic works to a minimum of 8 hours per week.
