Exclusive by Rudra Narayan Sahoo, Mumbai: Doctorate of Philosophy, popularly known as PhD is one of research degrees practiced by the higher education system. Pursuing PhD at any Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) is a dream for research scholars. In all 23 IITs in India, Out of these 23, 18 IITs offer PhD programmes.
At present, there are 25,000 scholars enrolled in various doctoral (PhD) programmes in the IITs. Out of six new IITs who have commenced classes from academic year 2016-17 – IIT Goa, IIT Bhilai (Chattishgarh), IIT Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir), IIT Dharwad (Karnataka), IIT Tirupati, and IIT Palakkad – only IIT Palakkad is offering PhD programmes.
For the upcoming semester – first semester of 2017-18 also known as Autumn Semester – most of IITs have already notified their PhD Admissions under various engineering, sciences and Humanities & Social Sciences disciplines. PhD Admission for First semester 2017-18 at IIT Roorkee has been closed. IIT BHU and IIT Hyderabad are yet to release their official notification for PhD admission for the next session. Rest 15 IITs have already notified their PhD admission process.
GATE 2017 results will be declared on 27 March 2017. As GATE score is used by most of these IITs for admission into various engineering PhD degrees, the admission process has gained momentum.
