New Delhi: The MPhil/PhD admissions are open in the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) for July 2017 session. For the current session, PhD programmes are available in 12 subjects and MPhil courses are available in two subjects. The closing date for submission of online application is 31 July 2017.
The PhD/Mphil programmes are offered by IGNOU on a Regular Mode, not distance education mode. The total number of PhD seat available is 97 while the total number of MPhil seat is 16. Here, SkillOutlook presents the seven key points of IGNOU PhD admission process and Entrance Test for July 2017.
1 PhD & MPhil Subjects with vacant seats: For July 2017 session, the following streams are available for PhD admission: Geology (20 seats), French (02), Geography (16), Journalism & Mass Communication (15), Statistics (08), Physics (02), Chemistry(05), Gender and Development Studies (06), Theatre Arts (01), Biochemistry (09), Women’s Studies (07), and Fine Arts (04 seats). Meanwhile, MPhil programmes are offered for July 2017 session in Chemistry (06) and Geography (10).
2 Eligibility Conditions: For MPhil: Master’s Degree from a University recognized by UGC in the relevant discipline with at least 55% marks [50% marks in the case of SC,ST and OBC(Non-creamy Layer)/ Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of UGC from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s Degree priorto19th September,1991].

3 Selection Process: IGNOU informed that admission to the M Phil/ PhD programmes is strictly on merit, based on performance in Entrance Test and Interview. The Entrance Test will be held on 20 August 2017 in 13 cities across India.
Candidates holding M.Phil. degree (along with course work and dissertation both) or those candidates who have cleared NET (conducted by UGC/CSIR/ICAR) or any other equivalent examination will be exempted from appearing in the Entrance Test. Those who have not cleared NET/any other equivalent examination or not holding M.Phil. Degree will be required to appear in the Entrance Test.
Those who secure at least 50% marks in the entrance test (45% marks incase of SC/ST/PH) will be shortlisted for the interview in order of merit subject tothe maximum limit of five times of the available seats. Entrance Test shall be qualifying in nature.
During Interview/ Presentation stage, short-listed Candidates in the Entrance Test will be called for interview/presentation of Synopsis before the Discipline specific Doctoral Research Committee. Also, those candidates exempted from appearing in the Entrance Test will also be called for interview/presentation of Synopsis before the Discipline specific Doctoral Research Committee.
4 Key Dates: The closing date for submission of online application is 31 July 2017. The Entrance Test will be held on 20 August 2017. The tentative date for declaration of results is 22 September 2017 ( Friday).
5 Entrance Test Centres: The Entrance Test will be held on 20 August 2017 (Sunday) in 13 cities across India. These cities include: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, and Trivandrum.
6 How to Apply: Applications are accepted via online mode only. No offline/hardcopy of the form will be accepted. Application fee is Rs. 1,000/- .
7 M Phil/ PhD programmes on Regular Mode: IGNOU offers M Phil/ PhD programmes under two categories: part time and full time. Both categories of students will be required to attend classes if course work is allotted to them.
The MPhil/ PhD programmes involve coursework during the first six months of admission, which will be conducted in IGNOU Campus at New Delhi only. A student has to attend the coursework on a regular basis. At least 80 per cent attendance in classes is compulsory.
