Singapore: For the fourth consecutive year, Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore) has topped the list of the world’s most dynamic young universities. NTU is ranked No. 1 in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Top 50 Under 50 league for universities that are 50 years old or younger. NTU leads the charge of young Asia-Pacific universities that occupy seven of the top 10 spots this year.
NTU achieved an overall score of 92.2 points, and maintained its lead ahead of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology that has been placed second since 2015.
NTU maintained its top spot because of its superior reputation among international employers and academics, and the diversity of its faculty and student populations. It also scored high marks for its citations per faculty.
Last month, NTU moved up two places to be ranked 11th among the world’s top universities by QS, the highest position ever achieved by an Asian or Singaporean university. In the last 7 years, NTU has vaulted more than 60 places from the 74th place in the 2010 QS global ranking.
NTU President, Professor Bertil Andersson, said, “NTU is honoured to once again plant the Singapore flag at the top of QS’ global league of young universities.
“NTU is not only cementing our place as the world’s No. 1 young university, but we have also moved up in the main league table to 11th place, just shy of the global Top 10. NTU will continue to place top priority on enhancing the quality of our education, research and innovation programmes.”
Commenting on the region, Professor Andersson said, “NTU leads Asia-Pacific’s pack of young, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)-focused universities that are steadily catching up with their established peers at home and abroad.
“Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea’s young STEM universities stand out as Asia Pacific’s up-and-coming dynamos and they are poised to become the world’s future powerhouses of higher education and research. As Asia’s dynamic economies continue to lead global growth, higher education will play an increasingly important role in the region’s development, and NTU is well-positioned to ride this wave of progress,” Prof Andersson said.
“We can also expect to see more intense healthy competition among the region’s universities, which will motivate them to adopt global best practices that can spur the region’s development in higher education and research,” Prof Andersson added.
In last month’s QS World University Rankings, NTU’s reputation among global employers improved the most by 10 positions from last year to 38th. This was followed by citations per faculty that climbed up 7 places to 57th worldwide.
Unlike the QS World University Rankings that assess institutional performance regardless of age, the QS Top 50 Under 50 is designed to be forward-looking, to showcase young universities established within the last 50 years with the potential to become higher education and research powerhouses of the future.
