New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), a central university based in New Delhi, is the top ranked university in the general stream category as per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2016. JNU is a dream destination for students across India considering its reputation, quality of education and affordability. The university is expected to release the admission notification for the academic year 2017-18 in the second week of February 2017.
There were a total number of 8,432 students in JNU as on 31 March 2016, as per the Annual Report 2015-16 of the university. Out of which, research students (MPhil, PhD/MTech, PhD/Direct PhD) represent the largest group with a total number 5,219, which was 62%. The university has awarded PhD degree to 601 students, MPhil degree to 555 candidates and graduate degree to 241 students during 2015-16. The university conducts an entrance examination on all India basis, which is held at 76 centres across India and one centre abroad (Kathmandu, Nepal). Programmes of study offered by JNU: During the year 2015-16, the university offered PhD, MPhil/PhD, MTech/PhD, MPH/PhD, MTech, and MPhil in 79 disciplines. JNU also offered MSc/MCA in 5 disciplines, Master’s programme in 27 disciplines; and under-graduate courses (in both Ist and 2nd year) in 09 foreign languages. In addition to these courses, it also offered Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses in various languages.
Admission Time line: Generally, the University releases the admission notification in the second week of February every year across national/regional newspapers and employment news paper. The start of online and offline application registration starts in second week of February and ends on fourth week of March. The all India written test is held annually in the third week of May every year for admission into various programmes.
Admission Test: Admission to various programmes offered by the university is purely based on merit, taking into account the candidate’s performance in the written examination and the viva-voce, wherever prescribed. The written test (wherever viva-voce is prescribed) carries 70 marks.
Candidates who seek admission to MPhil/PhD/Pre-PhD programmes and MA programmes in foreign languages (other than English) are required to appear for a viva-voce examination which is assigned 30% marks. The maximum number of candidates called for the viva-voce examination in each programme of study is normally not more than three times the number of seats approved by the Academic Council.
Selection of candidates: After the written test and viva-voce examination (wherever mentioned) finished, the university prepares a separate merit lists for General Category, SC, ST, PC and OBC candidates and foreign nationals for each course/programme of study. The final selection of candidates is based on the candidates’ performance in the written test and viva-voce examination (wherever prescribed) and the score of deprivation points (wherever applicable).
Historical applications trend of Jawaharlal Nehru University: For the academic session 2015-16, the JNU Entrance Examination was conducted during 16 – 19 May, 2015. A total number of 79,714 candidates (76,375 online and 3339 through OMR) registered. For appearing the test while total options exercised by the applicants worked out to 1,22,273 options in the entrance examination for various disciplines/ subjects/programmes of study.
Based on the performance of the candidates in the entrance examination and the merit lists prepared the University in accordance to the admission policy, 3,146 candidates were offered admission to various programmes of study, out of which 2,184 candidates joined. Out of these, 1,043 were men and 1,141 are women.
Of the total of 2184 candidates admitted to various programmes of studies, 924 were admitted to MPhil /PhD, MTech/PhD, Pre-PhD/PhD, MPH/PhD; and 894 to MA/MSc/MCA. The remaining 366 were admitted to BA (Hons) in foreign languages.
