Goa: Union HRD Minister Mr Prakash Javadekar has inaugurated Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Goa today (30 July 2016). On the inaugural ceremony of IIT Goa, Union Defence Minister Mr Manohar Parrikar and Chief Minister of Goa Mr Laxmikant Parsekar were also present.
Initially, IIT Goa will run on Goa Engineering College campus. At the initial stage, IIT Goa has 90 seats, 30 each in three streams of computer engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. The institute has already admitted the required students. Academic classes will start from 1 August 2016.
The IIT Bombay will mentor IIT Goa for the first three years. Faculty members from IIT Bombay will be taking classes at the new institutes. IIT Goa’s new 300-acre campus will be completed in a couple of years.
It can be noted that on 25 July 2016 the Lok Sabha passed IIT Amendment Bill 2016 for incorporation of six new IITs, including the one in Goa. The other new IITs are at Tirupati ( Andhra Pradesh ), Palakkad (Kerala), Dharwar (Karnataka), Bhilai ( Chhattisgarh ), Jammu (J&K) and conversion of Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad to an IIT under the Act.
