New Delhi: Prime Minister of India Mr Narendra Modi has become the most followed Indian on social media site Twitter after outpacing Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan. As on August 25, Prime Minister Modi had over 22.1 million followers on the microblogging  platform, while Bachchan (@SrBachchan) marginally behind with 22 million followers as on date.

The number of followers with Prime Minister Modi’s account (@narendramodi) is steadily gaining, as in January Modi’s Twitter followers surpassed that of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan (@iamsrk). Prime Minister Modi, then, became the second most followed Indian on Twitter with over 17,371,600 followers, compared to Khan’s 17,351,100.

Now, Khan has slipped to third position with most followed Indian on Twitter having 20.9 million users of the social media site following him. The trend on Mr Modi’s account is showing that the number of followers of Prime Minister Modi’s account (@narendramodi) consistently increased by about a million every two months in 2015.

At the global stage, Prime Minister Modi is also the second most followed politician among global political leaders, right after US President Barack Obama (@barackobama), as per Twitter.

Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi is aggressively using Twitter for the government of India’s pet projects such as #MakeInIndia, #SwachBharat, #MannKiBaat and #SelfieWithDaughter to reach and connect with citizens.

The prime minister himself instructed his cabinet colleagues to leverage social media platforms such as FaceBook, Twitter and LinkedIn to reach out general public on policy and publicity matters.

Bollywoord star Slaman Khan (@BeingSalmanKhan) is at the fourth position while actor Amir Khan (@aamir_khan) at the fifth place as far as the most Twitter followers are concerned.
