Bhilai: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai, was inaugurated by Union HRD minister Mr Prakash Javadekar today (7 August 2016) in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh. This is the country’s 23rd IIT. Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Dr Raman Singh also attended the IIT Bhilai inauguration ceremony.
Initially, IIT Bhilai will be run on the temporary campus in the premises of Government Engineering College, Raipur. Permanent campus of IIT Bhilai will come up over 525 acres of land around Kutelabata near Bhilai. IIT Hyderabad will be mentoring IIT Bhilai for the next three years. Admission process of the institute through IIT-JEE has been already over for the current academic year.
It can be noted that on 25 July 2016 the Lok Sabha passed IIT Amendment Bill 2016 for incorporation of six new IITs, including the one in Goa. The other new IITs are at Tirupati ( Andhra Pradesh ), Palakkad (Kerala), Dharwar (Karnataka), Jammu (J&K), Goa and conversion of Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad to an IIT under the Act.
