New Delhi:  Indian Institutes of Technologies (IITs) continue to dominate the India Ranking 2017 Report with 8 IITs in top ten engineering category institutes and 7 IITs in top ten overall category institutes.  There are 23 IITs in India at present. IIT Madras is crowned as the best institute in India among engineering institutes as per National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2017.

In the overall category, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has topped the list while IIT Madras bags the second place. IIT Madras has continued to be the first rank holder for the second year in a row. IIT Bombay stands second in the engineering category. IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur are placed at third, fourth and fifth rank spots, respectively in the engineering category. IIT Roorkee features at sixth place and IIT Guwahati places at seventh position. The top seven positions are grabbed by the first generation IITs, which were founded prior to 2001.

Among second generation IITs, which started operations during 2008-09 (8 IITs), IIT Hyderabad has performed the best with rank of 10 in the engineering category.  The second generation IITs include: Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Jodhpur, Patna, Ropar, Indore, and Mandi. IIT Indore secures 16th spot in the engineering category.  IIT Bhubaneswar grabs 18th place in the engineering category of NIRF 2017 and emerges among top ten IITs.

On the basis of performance in the NIRF 2017 report the Top Ten IITs are as followed: IIT Madras (1),   IIT Bombay (2),  IIT Kharagpur (3), IIT Delhi (4), IIT Kanpur (5), IIT Roorkee (6), IIT Guwahati (7), IIT Hyderabad (8), IIT Indore (09), IIT Bhubaneswar (10).

IIT Patna stands 19 position in the engineering category whereas it emerges as the 11th top IIT.  IIT Ropar bags 19th place while IIT (ISM) Dhanbad finds 21th position in NIRF 2017 (engineering category). IIT Mandi features at 28th position while IIT Gandhinagar secures 30st place in the engineering category. IIT BHU emerges as the 31st top engineering institutes as per NIRF 2017.

Hence, out of 23 IITs, the institutes which are in ranking range of 11-17 among IITs are as followed: IIT Patna (11), IIT Ropar (12), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad (13), IIT Mandi (14) , IIT Gandhinagar (15), IIT BHU (16), and IIT Jodhpur (17).

IIT Palakkad, IIT Tirupati, IIT Bhilai, IIT Goa, IIT Jammu, and  IIT Dharwad which have commenced academic year either in 2015-16 and 2016-17 have not either participated in NIRF 2017 or not included in the ranking list.
