Mumbai: Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SNIP), a leading autonomous institute under Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) based in Kolkata, has released official notification for PhD programme 2017-18. SNIP invited applications from eligible students to join the PhD programme in Physics and Biophysical Sciences starting from 2017-18 Session. The programme starts with a pre-Ph D course work, popularly known as Post MSc programme.

As per the website of SNIP, the eligible students should apply for the programmes only through on-line application, which is opened from 1 March 2017. For Physics, the closing date for submission of application is 15 April 2017 while for Biophysical Sciences, the closing date is 7 May 2017.

For physics stream, the Post MSc programme have two streams: Theoretical Physics and Experimental Physics.

Eligibility Conditions: Physics: MSc in Physics. Biophysical Sciences: MSc in Physics / Chemistry (with Life Science at 10+2 level) or MSc in Life Sciences (with Chemistry and Mathematics at 10+2 level). Students appearing in the final examinations for their Masters’ degrees during the current academic session may also apply. However, their admission will be made provisional till they successfully pass their Masters’ degrees in compliance with the cut-off requirement for SINP screening procedure (the institute will announce later).

Selection Procedure:  Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics informed that a first screening will be done based on previous academic records of the applicants. A further shortlist of candidates will be prepared based on the performance in nation-wide screening test as mentioned below:

For Physics (Experimental and Theoretical):

  1. i) Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST)
  2. ii) GATE in Physics

iii)  CSIR/UGC NET for JRF in Physics

For Biophysical Sciences:

  1. i) Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS) conducted by NCBS-TIFR.
  2. ii) CSIR/UGC/DBT/ICMR NET for JRF

iii)  GATE in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Physics and Chemistry

SINP has made it clear that the institute will not conduct written entrance test.

The short-listed candidates will be called for the next level of selection procedure including an interview process to be held at SINP (during May-June 2017). The short-listed candidates will be informed by e-mail and also through announcement in our web.

The final selection of candidates will be based on their performances in all the above stages of screening and selection.

Fellowships and Benefits:  Junior Research Fellow  scheme is applicable to all the selected students who are admitted to Post MSc. Depending on the selection procedure and eligibility in nation-wide screening tests, there are two type of fellowships the students can enjoy:

i) SINP fellowships for candidates who are selected through JEST, JGEEBILLS, GATE:

Rs 25,000/- pm for 1st two years

Rs 28,000/- pm for subsequent years

Tenure: 4 years, extendable to 5th year subject to satisfactory performance Contingency, HRA etc. as per rule

ii) Extramural fellowships awarded by external funding authorities of Govt of India (UGC, CSIR NET, DBT and ICMR) for candidates who are selected through NET:

The amount of fellowship, contingency grant, HRA etc. will be as per CSIR/UGC/DBT/ICMR rules (SINP will take no financial responsibility for students selected in this scheme.

Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics mentioned that the approximate intake capacity for SINP Fellowship is 20 while for candidates with Extramural Fellowship is 20.
