Dharwad: India got his 24th Indian Institute of Technology at Dharwad, Karnataka. Union HRD Minister   Mr Prakash Javadekar inaugurated IIT Dharwad today (28 August 2016). On this occasion, Karnataka Chief Minister  Mr Siddaramaiah and Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Mr Ananth Kumar were also present.

IIT Dharwad is Karnataka’s first IIT. The premier institute will initially run at the transit campus in Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) in Dharwad. The institute’s permanent campus is built in the sprawling 470 acres allocated by the government at nearby Kelgeri town. IIT Dharwad will be mentored by IIT Bombay over the next three years.

The first batch of 120 students has already joined the institute. It is offering B.Tech courses in three core branches namely Electrical, Computer Science and Mechanical. IIT Bombay Professor Narayan Punekar has been appointed Dean (administration) of IIT Dharwad. Out of 120 students, seven are girls and 10 are from Karnataka.

It can be noted that on 25 July 2016 the Lok Sabha passed IIT Amendment Bill 2016 for incorporation of six new IITs, including the one in Goa. The other new IITs are at Tirupati ( Andhra Pradesh ), Palakkad (Kerala), Bhilai  (Chhattisgarh), Jammu (J&K), Goa  and conversion of Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad to an IIT under the Act.
