London/Mumbai: Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bangalore is the top ranked universities in India As per The Times Higher Education’s 13th edition of its World University Rankings. IISC Bangalore is also edging closer to the top 200, claiming a spot in the 201-250 band, its highest ever position. India has 31 universities in the newly expanded World University Rankings top 980. India has two institutions in the top 400, the Indian Institute of Science (201-250 group) and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (351-400 cohort) and 14 new entrants in this year’s ranking.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay once again features in the 351-400 band globally with second ranked in India. The nation has four new entries in the top 800. IIT Delhi was placed at third while IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras grabbed fourth and fifth places, respectively. The calculation of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings has been subject to an independent audit by professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), making these the first global university rankings to be subjected to full, independent scrutiny of this nature.
Phil Baty, the editor of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, said: “India’s strong performance is partly correlated to the country recognising the importance of participating in global benchmarking exercises; just last month the government launched a new funding-backed project aimed at catapulting Indian Institutes of Technology to the top of world university rankings.”
“The World University Rankings feature an increasing number of leading east Asian universities that are beginning to rub shoulders with the global elite. It is encouraging that the Indian government has the same ambition to create world-class universities and that its leading institutions are already edging towards the world top 200.”
South Asia has almost doubled its representation in this year’s newly-expanded list of the world’s top universities, claiming 39 places, up from 20 last year. Sri Lanka makes its debut in the table with the University of the Colombo in the 801+ band, while Pakistan has five new entries, taking its total to seven. Phil Baty said “But the star of the region is India, which has 31 universities in the list.”
This year’s expanded list covers top 980 universities come from 79 different countries. The US loses the top spot for the first time in the 12-year history of the rankings as the UK’s University of Oxford becomes the world’s top university. California Institute of Technology, US, slipped to second position. The other top five global institutes are as followed: Stanford University (3rd), University of Cambridge (4th ), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (5th). Asia is emerging as the next higher education superpower in the recent years, while the region’s rise in the rankings is real and growing. Overall, 290 Asian universities from 24 countries make the ranking and an elite 19 find in the top 200.
