New Delhi: Rajasthan , Gujarat , and Uttar Pradesh have highest number of universities in India. With 84 universities, Rajasthan emerges top among states. Gujarat stands second with 76 varsities while Uttar Pradesh emerges third with 74 universities.
As on 11 September 2020, the total number of universities approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) is 955.
Replying an question in the Lok Sabha, Union Education Minister, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’) informed these information. The Minister said “For enabling Higher Educational Institutions to become world-class teaching and research institutions, the UGC has notified ‘UGC (Institutions of Eminence Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2017’ and UGC (Declaration of Government Educational Institutions as Institutions of Eminence) Guidelines, 2017.”
In the higher education, Arts subjects (include Humanities, Social Science & Languages etc) are very popular as highest number of students enrolled in 2018-19. More than 1.20 core students enrolled in Arts subjects while nearly 64 Lakh students enrolled in Science subjects. The total number students in commerce in 2018-19 were 44 Lakh. Nearly 14 students enrolled in Medicine subjects. Medicine includes Ayurveda, Dentristry, Homeopathy, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health/ Social Preventive Medicine, Unani, Tibbia, Physiotherapy, Naturotherapy etc.
The UGC has informed that the number of students enrolled in Arts, Science, Commerce, Medical Faculties during 2018-19 are as follows:
