TADEPALLIGUDEM, ANDHRA PRADESH : National Institute of Technology Andhra Pradesh is working to provide the platform to upcoming researchers in the areas of Power Electronics. Towards this, the Institute organized a five-day online training in ‘Power Electronics Applications in Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles’ (PEASE-2021) from 25th to 29th June 2021.

Power electronics is interdisciplinary in nature and is used in a wide variety of areas of Electric Drives, Power Quality in Power Systems, Renewable Energy systems, Microgrids and Electric Vehicles. This Faculty Development Program addressed the applications of power electronics in the industry and encouraged various zonal professionals, research scholars and academicians towards research and Academic Quality Improvement.

The Program was organized under AICTE Training and Learning (ATAL) Academy. The ATAL Academy is established with the vision “To empower faculty to achieve goals of Higher Education such as access, equity and quality.”

Delivering the Inaugural lecture on ‘Integration of Electric Vehicles in Smart Grids’ on 25th June 2021, Dr. V. Sandeep, Head of the Department, Electrical Engineering, NIT Andhra Pradesh, said, “Smart Grids play a vital role in building the future of electrical engineering and become emerging technology in view of future energy demand, climate change, penetration of renewable energy, integration of electric vehicles. The transformation from conventional grid to smart grids has many challenges in case of Indian scenario particularly. Advanced computational and communication technologies are required to create an end -to- end cyber enabled electric power system.”

Further, Dr. Sandeep said, “High efficiency, reliability, stability and minimization of costs are the attractive features. Scheduling of electric vehicles charging will become easier if integration with smart grid technologies happens. The students, faculty and engineers should understand the applications of Internet of Things, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Bigdata, Block-chain, Data Science, and Cyber Physical Systems in the power and energy sector. System-level thinking is the key skill component where a complex electrical system interacts with computing and data systems.”

Recognizing the importance of power electronics which has grown over the years due to several factors. NIT Andhra Pradesh has organised the training for researchers who are willing to work in the areas of

⮚          Advanced Control Systems

⮚         Distribution Systems

⮚         Renewable Energy Integration

  • Power Electronics in Electric Vehicles

⮚         Sensor-less Techniques

⮚         DC-DC converters in HEV’s

⮚         Multilevel Inverters

⮚         Battery Charging Systems

⮚         Latest Motor Drive Technologies

Addressing the inaugural event, Prof. C.S.P. Rao, Director, NIT Andhra Pradesh, said, “Now a days the cost of conventional fuel keeps on increasing and also the vehicles continue to produce lot of harmful gases which lead to climate change and global warming issues. So, we need to reduce the dependency on fuel-based vehicles and need to shift to clean technologies like electric vehicles. Exciting research is going on electric and hybrid vehicles globally.

Further, Prof. C.S.P. Rao said, “Already, the Indian railways are electrified and now it’s time to electrify the small vehicles like cars, buses, two-wheelers, etc. The technologies required for the electric vehicles is well developed by many researchers and industries. Power electronics is a key technology which is used in various energy applications. The main motto of the Faculty Development Program is to provide the platform for the upcoming researchers who interested to work in the areas of “Power Electronics in Smart Grids Energy Management & Storage, Renewable Energy Integration, Power Electronics in Electric Vehicles, Multilevel Inverters, and Battery Charging Systems” Hopefully, all participants will be motivated and inspired by the eminent speakers.”

⮚         Hands-on experience on simulation of dc-dc converters in Multisim software

⮚         Hands-on experience on simulation of converters in LTSPICE software

⮚         Explore the knowledge on PWM generation using dSPACE controller
