New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC), with an objective of improving quality of teaching and research in the Institutions of higher education, has been providing substantial support to selected universities and colleges through various Schemes like University with Potential for Excellence (UPE), Colleges with Potential for Excellence (CPE) and Centre with Potential for Excellence in Particular Area (CPEPA). These schemes aim at enabling varsities to reach the world class level and serve as benchmark for other institutions in the country.
The UGC has introduced these Schemes during the IX plan period which are still continued during the XII Plan period also. Under the Scheme UPE so far 15 universities have been selected. The UGC introduced this Scheme during the IX Plan period (2007-12) to identify few universities which had potential to achieve excellence in teaching and research activities.
Initially in the IX five year plan, five varsities were selected for the University with Potential for Excellence: Jawaharlal Nehru University, Hyderabad University, Jadavpur University, Pune University, and Madras University. Now the UPE tag universities expanded to 15. The scheme provides financial support to these universities improve their academic and physical infrastructure and introduce modern pedagogy and evaluation methodology.
