Washington/Mumbai: In the international education system, the contribution of Indian students is significant. Each year India nearly sends 4.5- 5 lakhs students to overseas destinations for higher study. Last year the students from India selecting overseas destinations for higher study expanded nearly 10%. For Indian students major higher education destinations are the USA, Canada, European countries (UK, Germany, France, etc), and Australia.

U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in education rankings for more than 30 years, yesterday released the 2017 Best Global Universities rankings. As Europe is a prominent higher education hub for Indian students, here Skilloutlook presents the Best Twenty Universities in Europe and emerging key trends in Europe as per 2017 Best Global Universities Rankings- U.S. News & World Report. The overall rankings are the largest and most comprehensive assessment of research universities worldwide, evaluating 1,000 universities – up from 750 last year – across 65 countries.

With 210 ranked universities, U.S. schools dominate the 2017 list and, for the first time, claim the top five spots. On the other hand the University of Oxford, ranked No. 6 on the overall list, emerges the No. 1 university in the Europe. Surprisingly, the top four spots in Europe are grabbed by the UK schools: University of Oxford (No 1), University of Cambridge (No 2 ), Imperial College London (No3), and University College London (No 4). Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (Switzerland) stands at the fifth place.

University of Edinburgh (UK) remains at sixth place in among European Universities while Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (Switzerland) features at the seventh position. Another university from the UK, Kings College London, grabs 8th place while University of Copenhagen (Denmark) and  KU Leuven (Belgium) find ninth and tenth places.

US News & World Report claimed that the overall rankings the most comprehensive assessment of research universities worldwide, evaluating 1,000 universities – up from 750 last year – across 65 countries. With 210 ranked universities, U.S. schools dominate the 2017 list while China has  87, United Kingdom 68, Germany 55 and France 49 universities among the 1,000 ranked institutes.

The University of Oxford emerges as the No. 1 school in the U.K. The top 5 universities in the UK are:

2017 Best Global Universities Rankings mentions that the U.K. had the strongest showing in the following subject rankings: Social sciences and public health: 50 ranked universities

Arts and humanities (35 ranked universities); Clinical medicine (29 ranked universities); Biology and biochemistry (28 ranked universities); Economics and business: 28 ranked universities Engineering  (28 ranked universities); and Plant and animal science (28 ranked universities).

The Best Global Universities methodology – which is based on Web of Science data and metrics provided by Clarivate Analytics InCites – weighs factors that measure a university’s global and regional research reputation and academic research performance using bibliometric indicators such as publications, citations and international collaboration. Each subject ranking has its own methodology based on academic research performance and reputation in that specific area.
