By Priti Prajna Sahoo, New Delhi: Master Degree is one of the popular academic degrees in the higher education system. Master in Arts (MA), Master in Science (MSc), Master in Technology (MTech), Master in Business Administration (MBA), Master in Information Technology (MIT), etc. are examples of Master Degree offered by various universities, institutes and colleges.  After graduation, students apply for  studying in master degree in a specialization subject.

Job opportunities galore for Master Degree holders. In India, more than 14 lakh candidates were awarded master degree under various disciplines or streams for 2014-15 academic year as per All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2014-15 final report. Tamil Nadu, one of best performing states in higher education, has awarded the highest number candidates with Master Degree in India with   2,23,547 students.

Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India, stands second in awarding Post Graduate degree. In 2014-15 academic year, Uttar Pradesh, produced 2,13,708 Post Graduate degree holders. Next to Uttar Pradesh, the highest number students awarded with Post Graduate degree were from Maharashtra (138,682).

The fifth and sixth positions were occupied by Andhra Pradesh (90,110) and Karnataka (89,180). The other top ten states in awarding Post Graduate degree are as followed:  Telangana (81,073), West Bengal (68,092), Madya Pradesh (63,117), Delhi (58,792), and Rajasthan (58,647).

At Master Degree level, number of MA pass students is the highest (5.25 lakh) followed by MSc (2.26 lakh) and MBA (2.17 lakh). About 72,050 students have been awarded MTech/ ME degree where the share of male students is more than 62%.

On a subject wise at PG level, maximum students passed out is observed in Social Science (2.40 lakh)  while Management comes at  second position with 2.36 lakhs students.
