Bangalore: India’s top ranked educational institute in science and technology, Indian Institute of Science Bangalore is known for advanced research in frontier areas of science, engineering and technology  globally. The students pursuing research degree represent more than 70% of the student body, the largest group on the campus.  The Institute awards about 250 PhD and M Tech (Research) degrees, every year.

Broadly, the Institute offers two types of PhD degree: PhD (Regular) and Integrated PhD. Through regular type PhD course, IISc offers research opportunities in nearly 38 subject areas. Through Integrated PhD, candidates with Bachelor’s degree can pursue advanced research in frontier areas of Biological, Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences leading to a PhD degree. After successful completion of integrated PhD programmes, candidates will get dual degrees : Master Degree and PhD Degree.

Key Dates: The submission of online application will start from 01 February 2017 via the official website of IISc Bangalore. The closing date for online submission of application is 24 March 2017. The classes will commence from 01 August 2017.

PhD Regular:  Eligible candidates can apply for doctoral degree (PhD) in 38 subject areas including Instrumentation and Applied Physics, Biosystems Science and Engineering, Energy, Mathematical Sciences, Nanoscience and Engineering, Cyber Physical Systems, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Earth Sciences, Chemical Engineering , Materials Engineering, Astronomy and Astrophysics, Mathematics, Physics, Computational and Data Sciences – Computational Science , etc. Further, research opportunities in subject areas of Biochemistry, Molecular Reproduction; Development and Genetics, Ecological Sciences, Organic Chemistry, State and Structural Chemistry and others are available.

For exact eligibility criteria for getting admission into PhD courses at IISc Bangalore, candidates should refer the admission page of official website of IISc Bangalore (http://www.iisc.ac.in/) .

As per the admission notification of IISc, the selection of candidates for admission to research programmes will be through an interview to be held at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore during the period  5 – 9 June 2017 and for interdisciplinary programme during 3 and 4 June 2017.

Short-listing for Interview: For admission to PhD  programmes in Engineering Faculty:

Candidates should take note of admission process that for Ph D programme candidates with ME /M Tech / M Sc(Engg) / MS / MBA (post BE / B Tech / Master’s degree) degree holders will be short-listed for interview for Ph D programmes based on their academic performance (including their past performance in the national tests, qualified prior to their Master’s studies, and/or the number of Publications if any will be given weightage).

Short-listing for Interview: For admission to Ph D programmes in Science Faculty

For PhD programme in Science Faculty candidates with ME /M Tech / M Sc(Engg) / MS / Master’s degree in Pharmacy, Agriculture, Veterinary, Medicine degree holders will be short-listed for interview for Ph D programmes based on their academic performance (including their past performance in the national tests like GATE/ JRF/ GPAT qualified prior to their Master’s studies).

Integrated PhD: Each year, IISc Bangalore admits 50 to 60 students under Integrated PhD progarmme: 15 to 18 in Biological Sciences, 15 to 18 in Chemical Sciences, 15 to 18 in Physical Sciences and 12 to 15 in Mathematical Sciences.  The entire program covers flexible course work, an internship-type laboratory training (wherein ample opportunities exist for the candidate to acquire basic experimental skills and familiarity with advanced techniques for research), a research project to demonstrate attainment of a high degree of scientific ability followed by advanced research leading to a PhD thesis on a specific topic.

Eligibility for Integrated PhD admission in a brief: Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology/Biotechnology/ Chemistry/ Physics/ Mathematics/ Pharmacy/ Veterinary Sciences/ Agriculture as applicable to individual discipline, under the 10+2+3/4 system, are eligible to apply to this program.

Candidates with BE/ B Tech degree and qualify in Mathematics/ Mathematical Statistics paper in JAM are eligible to apply for the Mathematical Sciences discipline.

Candidates with BE/ B Tech degree and qualify in Biotechnology paper in JAM are eligible to apply for  Biological Sciences discipline.

Candidates who seek admission to the Ph D (Integrated) programmes at IISc should qualify in JAM 2017 must submit the IISc online application during February/March 2017. The JAM result must be updated online immediately after the JAM results are announced.

Candidates who have cleared JEST 2017 and seek admission to the Ph D (Integrated) programme in Physical Sciences are also eligible to apply.

IISc Bangalore mentioned that the minimum requirement for admission to the Integrated Ph D program is a First Class or equivalent Grade in the Bachelor’s degree. Meanwhile the minimum requirement of First Class in the qualifying examination is relaxed to Pass Class for SC/ST candidates.

For some departments, there are specific requirements of subjects at the Bachelor’s or 10+2 levels for getting admission into this course. For exact eligibility criteria interest candidates should visit the admission page of official website of IISc Bangalore (http://www.iisc.ac.in/.

Scholarship offered to Research scholars:  IISc offers scholarships to candidates from the date of their joining. For PhD candidates a total of Rs 25000/28000 (JRF/SRF) per month is offered. For Integrated PhD programs, a total amount of Rs 16000/25000/28000 per month (Master degree/JRF/SRF) is offered to candidates.
