Special Report by Rudra Narayan Sahoo, New Delhi: Do you aspire to pursue career in research or lectureship in Universities and Colleges in Social Sciences and Humanities Group subjects? The interested candidates need to qualify the University Grants Commission – National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) exam. On behalf of the UGC, the National Testing Agency conducts UGC-NET twice in a year (June & Dec) since December 2018. Till December 2018, the CBSE conducted the UGC-NET in 84 subjects at 91 selected cities spread across the country.
NET is conducted for determining the eligibility for ‘Assistant Professor’ or ‘for Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor both’ in Indian Universities and Colleges. It is one of the toughest competitive exams for aspirants. In June 2019 NET exam, more than 9 Lakh candidates registered to appear the exam. Out of these, more than 6.8 Lakh candidates appeared on both papers. More than 50,000 candidates qualified for Assistant Professor only. A number of 4,756 candidates qualified for JRF & eligible for Assistant Professor in June 2019.
Here, SkillOutlook presents the procedure and criteria for declaration of results and Cut-off score subjects wise for December UGC-NET. The test will be conducted by NTA between 02 and 06 December 2019.
Procedure and Criteria for declaration of result & Cut Off:
Step I – Pass/Qualified Rate: The number of candidates to be qualified (total slots or Eligibility for Assistant Professor) shall be equal to 6% of the candidates appeared in both the papers of NET.
Step II – Reservation Policy: The total slots shall be allocated to different categories as per the reservation policy of Government of India.
Step III – Minimum Marks to score in Exam: In order to be considered for ‘JRF and Eligibility for Assistant Professor’ and for ‘Assistant Professor’, the candidate must have appeared in both the papers and secured at least 40% aggregate marks in both the papers taken together for General (Unreserved) category candidates. At least 35% aggregate marks in both the papers taken together for all candidates belonging to the reserved categories (viz., SC, ST, OBC (belonging to Non-Creamy Layer, PwD and Transgender).
Step IV – Cut off for Assistant Professors: The number of candidates to be declared qualified in any subject for a particular category is derived as per the methodology illustrated below:

The aggregate percentage of the two papers corresponding to the number of slots arrived at, shall determine the qualifying cut-off for Eligibility for Assistant Professor ‘in ‘Economics’ for the SC category.
Similar yardstick shall be employed for deriving the subject-wise qualifying cut-offs for all categories.
Step V – for JRF: All candidates who had applied for ‘Eligibility for JRF & Eligibility for Assistant Professor both’ out of the total number of qualified candidates derived as per Step IV, shall constitute the consideration zone for JRF.
Step VI – Cut Off for JRF & Assistant Professor both: The total number of slots available for awarding JRF is allocated among different categories as per the reservation policy of Government of India. The procedure for subject wise cum category-wise allocation of JRF slots is illustrated below:

The aggregate percentage of the two paper scores corresponding to the number of JRF slots arrived at, shall determine the qualifying cut-off for JRF in ‘Economics’ for the ST category. Similar location procedure is used for all subjects and categories.
As per the Information Bulletin of UGC NET Dec 2019, the above qualifying criteria decided by UGC is final and binding. Result of the examination shall be hosted on NTA website www.ntanet.nic.in and will be declared by 31 December 2019.
